📦 Modular architecture

The house that arrives ready on a truck

Fast, sustainable and surprisingly sophisticated: modular construction with shipping containers left the niche and became desirable architecture. Understand how it works — and why it interests us so much.

Imagine a house that is born in a workshop, travels by truck and is assembled on site in a matter of days. It's not futurism — it's modular construction with shipping containers, one of the most elegant ideas in contemporary architecture. What began as improvised shelter became an object of desire: houses, offices, cafés and inns that combine speed, sustainability and chic industrial aesthetics.

Why containers captivate

  • Speed: the structure already exists. Much of the work happens in parallel, in a controlled environment — the timeline plummets.
  • Sustainability: reusing a container gives new life to the steel, with far less rubble and waste than conventional construction.
  • Predictability: fewer budget and schedule surprises, because the module is standardised.
  • Aesthetics: the industrial lines, the large glass openings and the flexibility to stack and combine modules create spaces with personality.

How a container house comes to life

The charm is in the details — and each stage has its craft:

  • Acquisition and transport: choosing the right container (20- or 40-foot are the most used) and taking it to the site.
  • Foundation and levelling: preparing the base that receives the module.
  • Cuts and metalwork: the metalworker opens doors, windows and openings, reinforcing the structure — the technical heart of the build.
  • Glazing: the large openings that bring in light and transform the space.
  • Installations: electrical and plumbing built into the design.
  • Insulation and cladding: the decisive stage — rock/PET wool, drywall and a ventilated roof ensure thermal and acoustic comfort.
  • Finishing: floors, paint and, why not, a rooftop with a view.

What this has to do with Villela Stay

Everything that attracts us to modular construction — efficiency, sustainability, well-thought-out spaces full of character — is what we pursue in every stay. Brasília was born from a bold bet on architecture; it makes sense that, around here, we stay curious about what comes next. If you're interested in projects like this too — to live in, to invest or to build — talk to us. We love a good conversation about spaces.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a container build take?
Much less than conventional construction. Since much of the work (structure, cuts, installations, finishes) happens in parallel and in a controlled environment, a residential container project can be ready in weeks to a few months, versus many months or years of a traditional build. The final timeline depends on size and finish.
Is a container house hot?
Without treatment, yes — steel conducts a lot of heat. That's why thermal insulation is the most important stage: rock or PET wool, a ventilated roof, drywall and good solar orientation turn the container into a comfortable space, even in a hot climate like Brasília's. Done well, it's as pleasant as any brick house.
Is modular construction cheaper?
It tends to be more economical and, above all, more predictable: less waste, less build time and fewer budget surprises. The final cost varies with finish, installations and insulation — a sophisticated project can approach high-end masonry, but with timeline and sustainability in its favour.
